DATES 1930’S TO 1940’S. (CAINBLF1). JOSEPH LAMBERT CAIN (1904-2003). Born and raised in New Orleans, Joseph Cain studied at the Chicago Academy of Art and at the Art Students League in New York.
Just found in an estate, early watercolor by Charles Searles (1937-2004), the important and influential African American artist. An atmospheric work, it has a deep presence, very characteristic of the early paintings of Searles. One can see this was executed very simply on a sheet torn from an artist’s pad. Guaranteed authentic. Measures 11” x 14” (sheet) in a 18 1/2” x 15 1/4” mat. The works of Charles Searles have sold for up to $40,000 at auction.
Hayley Lever. [Richard] Hayley Lever was born in Bowden, South Australia in 1875. He excelled in painting classes at Prince Alfred College (1883-91) and Norwood Art School (1891-93) in Adelaide. He developed a spontaneous-looking style that used vivid colors and strong lines while portraying subject matter that wads recognizable and appealing.
RMS Carpathia – Cunard Liner, Circa 1916. Watercolor and Gouache, Matted, by Pennsylvania Artist David Young. It was considered a most heroic act and was received with great fanfare upon her arrival in New York with the survivors.
