🔥 Vintage Old New York Regionalism WPA Cityscape Oil Painting, French Street
This is a beautiful and fine Vintage Old New York Regionalism WPA Cityscape Oil Painting on artist board, by painter Dorothy Shaubach. I could not find much information on this artist, but perhaps you know more about her or her work? This piece depicts the French area of New York City, historically referred to as «Little France» in the SoHo district, where many French immigrants have historically settled. It is rendered in exquisitely fine brush strokes, creating a dreamlike urban cityscape scene of various brownstone apartments, large shady trees, and a quiet city street in the center, which is shrouded in wispy shadows by the tree line overhead. To the left of the scene, you can see a merchant woman with her cart, hawking fruits or vegetables. To the right of the scene, on the stoop of an apartment, a Hasidic Jewish man with a traditional fur hat (shtreimel) can be seen peering outwardly. In the far background, a yellow taxi and some women and children are visible. This work is signed, titled and dated on the verso: «Dorothy Shaubach…French Street…Fall – 1967.» Approximately 15 3/4 x 19 3/4 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 12 x 16 inches. Very good condition for age, with some light edge wear and a few scuffs to the original period frame (please see photos.) Acquired in Pasadena, California. If you like what you see, I encourage you to make an Offer. Please check out my other listings for more wonderful and unique artworks!
