After helping to found two short-lived literary magazines in the late 1940s and early 1950s, Gironella turned to painting, winning a prize at the Paris Biennial for Young Painters in 1960; his work was characterized by fantasy and vivid colour, and although he reacted against art constrained by “social conscience,” he was a noted supporter of left-wing causes, helping to found the leftist newspaper La Jornada in 1984 (b. Sept. 26, 1929, Mexico City, Mex.—d.
