The intricate detailing and Islamic style reflect the traditional Persian artistic techniques from the early 19th century. This unique piece of art showcases the rich history and cultural significance of Persian miniature painting, making it a valuable addition to any art collection.
Here is a painting of a mother and daughter seated with books in front of the type of setting most popular around 1815 or so. An architectural column and flowing red drapery are the backdrop of this setting, with the two subjects seated at a table.
The painting has wonderful traditional character with deep rich tones and a highly atmospheric presentation. The sitter is presented with refined understated elegance typical of early-to-mid 19th century English portrait painting.
Particularly noteworthy is the painting’s execution on burlap sack. Comparable examples are preserved in major institutional collections, including a celebrated Spanish Colonial Archangel Raphael painted in oil on burlap within the collection of the Brooklyn Museum.
The painting is signed at the bottom center «A. H. BRODMAN». The artwork was painted in what I believe is a combination of watercolor and gouache on cardboard.
