King Charles I Children Prince James & Mary Princess Royal after Van Dyck 1800ca
King Charles I (children) Prince James, Duke of York & Mary Princess Royal after Anthony van Dyck oil / canvas 1800 ca. These paintings originally by Sir Anthony van Dyck depict two of the three eldest sons and daughter of the English sovereign King Charles I of England and Queen Consort Henrietta Maria of France. The portraits derive from a larger portrait of King Charles I’s three eldest children. Two of the three children have been individually portrayed in excellent manner, shown in half length posture. The original full portrait of the three children is located at The Savoy Gallery in Turin (Galleria Sabauda). The artist behind these excellent paintings of exuberant color and luminescence could be the famed Italian realist Dominico Morelli as indicated on the versos. Notation labels on the verso of each portrait indicate through provenance that these derived portraits were painted by Dominico Morelli. Frame dimension: (24.5 h x 19.75 w inches), (62 cm h x 50.5 cm w). Condition report: Both protraits were relined during the same period (mid 1960’s). The original canvases were fragile around the borders where they made contact with the stretchers. Extreme care was taken by Bonfoey Company to insure a smooth flat surface was obtained, still retaining all of the original texture with excellent view of the original brush strokes. The surface does show a good amount of craqulare which is expected with paintings of this age. The canvases are free of damage, they are exceptionally clean in excellent condition. Information regarding the original Van Dyck portrait at the Savoy Gallery Turin, Italy (see image): The painting depicts the three eldest sons and daughter of the English sovereign King Charles I of England and Queen Consort Henrietta Maria of France and was sent as a gift in 1635 to the Dukes of Savoy, Victor Amadeus I and Christine of France, to offer them an intense portrait of the three nephews. Little Mary Princess Royal, (later Mary Princess of Orange, and mother of the usurper ), just four years old, is at the center of the scene, while Charles, Prince of Wales (later King Charles II), the eldest son, turns his gaze to the spectator caressing the head of his dog, a beautiful seven-year-old spaniel, and infant James, Duke of York (later King James II & VII), three years old, clasps his hands an apple, probable symbol of fruitfulness. The folds of the carpet, probably due to the continuous movements of the small models, betray their impatience to the long poses before the painter. The ability of the painter in the rendering of precious faces and clothing, the refinement of the laces and the shimmering reflections of the fabrics, which connotes Van Dyke as the most important portraitist of the seventeenth century in the courts and the European aristocratic families, appears extraordinary.
