Original antique oil painting on wood panel by G. Delalande, titled “Grouville”, depicting a coastal beach scene in Jersey, Channel Islands, with cliffs, figures, boats, and choppy sea. Signed lower right and identified on the frame slip as Grouville / G. Delalande. A charming small Channel Islands coastal work presented in an ornate period gilt frame. Artwork size listed by auction as approximately 6 1/4 x 8 1/4 in. Framed size approximately 13 x 14 1/2 in.
Outstanding watercolor painting of the New Jersey boardwalk after a major storm. From the late 19th or very early 20th century by Erwin F Faber, 1866 – 1939. Part of a grouping of works recently acquired that had works by himself, his brother and his father, all of whom were artists.
Listed artist: James Matthews (England) Medium: watercolor on watercolor paper adhered to board Dates: 19th century-exact age is unknown as painted is not dated. Presuming mid 19th century. Signed on front lower left with location on bottom lower right. Region: Near Angmering, Sussex Antique frame with glass Paper back with original provenance tag was very torn up. I was able to save the tag and taped it lightly to back board. Measures: Painting adhered board- board “14 x 21” Frame- 18” x 24” Painting was removed from frame for detailed and up close imagery. Painting was reframed in original frame. Condition: Manufacturer water mark (of paper type) is visible through painting (see foreground) Toning from age, toning lines, acid burn, fade, light areas of foxing, scratch (see dove), discoloration, stains and spots (see sky/clouds) along with other mild wear from age. Painting could use some restoration but still looks very lovely! Beautiful painting!!! Frame condition: Damage, abrasions, splitting at corners, corners need repair and reinforcement, chips to corners, cracks, scuffs, thick surface scratches, heavy wear, residue, loss, scuffs, spots and stains on glass. As shown these areas are highly visible. While it’s still looks very nice in this frame and hanging, it does need repair. Painting with frame is sold as-is, as shown.
In the background, a bay window opens onto a garden. From 1887 he studied with Carolus – Duran in Paris, exhibiting at the Paris Salon (1887-1889) and the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts (1891).
