Alton Pickens (1917–1991) was an American artist and educator known for his surrealist-influenced paintings and drawings. Born in West Virginia, he studied at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh and later at the Art Students League in New York. His work often featured dreamlike, allegorical scenes and demonstrated a fascination with the human form, mythology, and religious themes. Pickens served in World War II, an experience that influenced his art’s often dark and introspective qualities. In addition to his artistic practice, he was a respected teacher at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. His work has been exhibited in various galleries and museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, though he remains a somewhat lesser-known figure in the mid-20th-century American art scene.
