William Henry Machen was born inArnhem, the Netherlands. His early education was by tutors. He also received art instruction from his uncle, C. W. Kuyke, aportrait painter in Arnhem. He was talented in other ways too.

Rendered with expressive brushwork, the composition features a lively table arrangement of fruit and white blossoms, set against softly textured peach and green tones. The palette and surface movement give the piece a warm, painterly charm typical of post-war Japanese modernism. Oil on canvas. Signed “卓” lower right.
