PLEASE READ SHIPPING DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY BEFORE BUYING! To learn more about us please click on our profile On view here is a miniature portrait of an elderly officer of the Austrian infantry from the turn of the 19th century (he looks for age of 60/70 years). His stand-up collar was introduced (instead of the turn-down one) in 1798. His hairstyle also corresponds to late 1790s – early 1800s. His orange regimental color (color of his collar) together with the yellow buttons provide the number of his regiment: No 59 (see our image). Due to the fact that the portrait shows him only until mid-chest, we do not see the cuffs of his regimental and cannot definitely say if he was a junior of senior officer. Nevertheless, the sitter’s visual age lets suppose that he was either a colonel, commander of the regiment, or his «deputy» – lieutenant colonel. In the aforementioned period, the following officers had these functions in the 59th Regiment: – From 1795 to 1799 regiment was commanded by Colonel Joseph Leopold Johann Nepomuk Freiherr (Baron Frenzel von Baumgarten zu Grub (see image). In 1798 (stand-up collar is introduced) he was 50 years old (to young to be our sitter). The regiment’s lieutenant colonel at this time was 52 year-old (also too young!) Franz Högel von Hochheim (see image). – In 1799 Frenzel von Baumgarten was promoted to major general and was replaced as commandant by Högel von Hochheim who was just promoted to colonel. The latter’s lieutenant colonel became the then 51-year-old (too young!) Christoph Adler (see image) – In 1803 Högel was promoted to major general and left the 59th Regiment. He was replaced by 67-year-old (sic!) Johann Le Loup (see image). Christoph Adler remains to be lieutenant colonel. – Finally, in 1805, Adler was promoted to colonel and replaced Le Loup. His former position was occupied then by Wenzel von Lilienberg who was just promoted from the majors of this regiment. But the latter cannot be in question to be our sitter since he was then already Knight of the Maria-Theresian Order and our sitter has no awards. From all of them Le Loup is the most prefferable person. We believe he commissioned this portrait in 1803, just after his appointment Commander of 59th Regiment. Native of Brussels (then Austrian Netherlands (modern day Belgium), Johann Bapotist von Le Loup was in the rank of major of the Austrian infantry at the beginning of the War of the 1st Coalition. He was the founder of the so-called «Niederländisches Feld-Jäger-Frei-Corps» («Dutch Chasseur free corps», also «Le Loup Corps») consisting of French émigrés and soldiers of fortune. The unit was then the most useful from all existing free-corps Austrian Army. In 1801 it was disbanded. The fact that the 59th Regiment (especially its headquarter) was stationed in Pilsen, Bohemia (then Austrian Empire, now Czech Republic) in the aforementioned period, allows us to search for a possible author among the Bohemian miniaturists of the time. And as first in question we would name an artist from Prague (then centre of Bohemia) Jan Mayer (for comparison see our web #43621). Jan (Johann) Mayer was born in 1764 in Weseric, Bohemia (now Bezdruzice, Czech Republic) and died in 1809 in Prague. He was active between 1802-1809 in Prague as portrait miniaturist. «Marechal-de-camp Arnaud Rogé (Napoleon’s ‘L’escadron sacre’)», miniature, 1832

This miniature was executed (we are firmly convinced!). shortly after January 5, 1832 (the promotion of the sitter to «marechal-de-camp» (two-star-general). Eleven years later, after the award of the next class of the Legion – that of «Grand Officer» – another artist added on his left chest the breast star required for this degree (see our image). ).
