His images of the Lewis and Clark expedition were adopted by the US Postal Service, museums and corporations to commemorate the expeditions 2004 bicentennial. Henderson was raised on a ranch on the Rocky Boy’s Chippewa-Cree reservation in Montana. «I paint what I know,» says Henderson, who’s now 40 years old. «From growing up on the ranch, I know horses and I know my culture. That’s what you see in my work.» Henderson had talent as early as the third grade, but passed on a scholarship to the Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe, NM, after high school to join the Army. «I was trying to find myself,» he reasons.’ Although he’s been traveling the last couple of years, Chippewa-Cree artist Jesse W. Henderson is back on the artistic trail, beginning with a two-week stint at the Museum of the Plains Indian (MPI) in Browning as the current featured artist. «My last show was in Santa Fe in 2006,» said Henderson, «so this is a good place to start, and I’ve always wanted to do stuff in here. It’s good exposure before I hit the national trail.’ Henderson says he’s been painting since 1996, having left his job at a power company after being offered a buyout deal. «Right from the start, it’s been great,» Jesse said. A resident of Rocky Boy’s Reservation, Henderson met David Dragonfly of the Museum of the Plains Indian when he first started out as an artist. «He’s a good promoter,» said Henderson about Dragonfly’s having invited him to be MPI’s featured artist. «It’s worth coming to look at,» said Henderson of his work. «It’s a little different than stereotypical Indian art.» Indeed, Henderson’s paintings seem entirely three-dimensional, inviting the viewer to step inside the scenes he’s created. Some of the works on display are from his Lewis and Clark series, for which he was honored as an Official Lewis and Clark Signature Artist.»
