Portrait Miniature of Lord Kenyon, Framed Oval, British, c. 1750-1799

An English portrait miniature of Lord Kenyon, an 18th-century barrister ( 1732–1802). Data on reverse reveals that he was “Attorney General 1782/Master of the Rolls 1784/Chief Justice 1788/Kings Bench.“ Sitter wears judicial wig and an elaborate black robe trimmed with gold braid. The background is brown. The portrait has the sobriety of a larger painting and thus may be a copy. The portrait was originally set in a severely distressed papier-mâché frame but has been re-framed to incorporate the original brass bezel topped by a crown. Feel free to ask questions.

JOHN HERBERT CADDY (1801-1883) ORIGINAL OIL ON BOARD PAINTING 1816 ANTIQUE

JOHN HERBERT CADDY (1801-1883) ORIGINAL OIL ON BOARD PAINTING 1816 ANTIQUE For sale is an original painting titled; the frigate “Nereide”, by John Herbert Caddy. This rare artwork was painted in 1816, while Caddy was enrolled in the British Military Royal Academy in Woolwich. The Néréide was a sibylle class French frigate that was captured by the British in 1797. She was renamed HMS Nereide by the British and serviced the Royal Navy until her re-capture in 1810 by her original builders the French Navy. The painting is in excellent condition with slight craquelure and surface dirt, considering it is over 200 years old. The size is 22cm W X 14cm H Biography John Herbert Caddy (1801-1883) was born in Quebec City on June 28, 1801. In 1815, he moved to England for military training at Woolwich which included, topographical sketching and painting. After a long military career he retired in 1851, settling in Hamilton, Ontario (Upper Canada). There he opened an art studio, providing art classes privately as well as institutionally at Wesleyan Female College. Caddy was a painstaking artist who worked slowly and carefully from pencil sketches made on the scene, through sepia drafts, to the finished picture. Apparently he sometimes completed several versions of the finished landscape but rarely, if ever, signed his work. He exhibited water-colors and oils in the annual provincial exhibitions from 1858 to 1868, winning awards for his meticulous landscapes, marines, and animal and flower studies. From 1858 to 1868, he exhibited water colors and oil paintings at the Upper Canada Provincial Exhibitions (UCEP).
