Tonalist Landscape Painting by Fred Griffing III Description and Item Information Up for sale is this unframed oil painting by the listed California artist, Frederick Griffing III. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This tonalist, expressionist landscape painting depicts a hillside with trees. The painting is on canvas which is affixed to a repurposed board (this artist is known to have used salvaged / found boards). The board is about 1/4 inch thick. The overall size is approximately 12 7/8 inches by 20 1/2 inches, but the top edge is irregular, as made. At the top edge, the canvas hangs over the board on which it is affixed; the canvas is stiff with paint. This painting weighs 2 pounds 4.0 ounces, unpacked. This would be a good addition to a collection of modern art. Identification This painting is by the Oakland, California outsider (art brut) artist, Frederick Griffing III (1951-2010). Th age of this painting is not known, but it may be vintage. Griffing is listed on askART. Per askART, he was a fourth generation Californian artist (his great uncle was the well-known Taos artist, Walter Ufer). Griffing lived and worked from his pick-up truck, a mobile studio of sorts. He sold paintings on the street, but his works were also sold in galleries. Griffing painted seascapes, landscapes, and portraits. Verso, there is an attached clear plastic envelope containing artist information and a torn photocopy of an advertisement for Griffing’s Corner Roadside Art Show at Broadway and 51st Street in Oakland, California. Condition The painting is unframed. It is in very good condition, with light wear. It has one irregular edge, as made. The painting has surface irregularities, including at least one paintbrush bristle, as made. There is a small area of craquelure at the lower right.
