Peter Eduard Stroely-Follower «Officer of Austrian Infantry Regiment No.42»

PLEASE READ SHIPPING DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY BEFORE BUYING! To learn more about us please click on our profile A signed original miniature (after which this piece was made) with a portrait of a young Austrian military officer belonged formerly to collections von Frankenstein (Hebig by Munich) and Professor Ullmann (Vienna; see our image nr.7; it resurfaced again at Sotheby’s London, on October 24th 2002, lot 33 (see image nr.8) and ten years later at the sale of Christie’s London (November 27-28, Lot 219 (see image nr.9; acquired by Moscow collector). The sitter wears an uniform of an officer of Austrian infantry from period of 1797-1798 (his collar seems to be still turn-down (in 1798 was replaced by stand-up one)). His orange collar and white buttons tell us it is the 42th Infantry Regiment. According to the recent publications of the Russian art historian, Dr. Lyubov Pulikova, Peter Eduard Stroely (Straely, Stroehling, Stroelling) was born in autumn of 1766 in Dusseldorf into the family of Johann Burhard Stroely and Marie Gertrude Bliessem (a note of the baptism of the newborn Peter Eduard Heinrich Burhard Stroely (Stroehling) was made on 28 October 1766). The artist’s father was a member of the «Malerzunft» (artist guild) and was active as an artist making monumental decorations. Peter Eduard, probably, began his art education in the native Dusseldorf (in the local drawing school, which became an Academy of Fine Arts in 1777) or he even visited Italy or England for study. In any case, in the 1780s he already worked in Germany as itinerant miniaturist; we meet him in Mannheim and Mainz in 1789, in Frankfurt in 1791/92, and in Berlin 1792. In late 1792 he came to Naples to work at the court (some historians believe he worked also in Rome at that time). In early 1795 the artist came to Vienna where he mainly worked for the Royal House and high aristocracy. Approximately in late February – beginning of March 1797 Stroely came to St. Petersburg where he stayed until March 1802. And again, among his clients were only members of the Russian Royal Family and high aristocrats. From Russia he came to Berlin, where for a few months he worked for the Prussian royalties, and in 1803 finally settled in England, where he stayed until his death after 1828. Works of his are to see in most important museums in Germany, Russia, Great Britain etc. Condition: good Creation Year: 19th century Measurements: UNFRAMED: 8.6 cm x 6.5 cm / 3.4″ x 2.6″ inches FRAMED: 13.2 cm x 11.3 cm / 5.2″ x 4.4″ inches Object Type: Framed miniature Style: Portrait Miniatures Technique: watercolor painting Inscription: – Creator: Peter Eduard Stroely – Follower Creator Dates: 1766 Dusseldorf-after 1828 London Nationality: German Themes: RUSSIAN PORTRAIT MINIATURES OLD RUSSIAN ENGLISH BRITISH AUSTRIAN MILITARY MILITARY PORTRAIT UNIFORM MALE PORTRAIT YOUNG MAN 800×600 Normal 0 21 false false false DE-AT X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 SHIPPING OPTIONS: We ship priority registered regular Austrian mail within 48 hours after your purchase.
