Listed Hungarian Artist Mikalos Szemere-Strmnik (1864-1961) Signed, on lower left, this Serene Figures with a Horse in Landscape scene. It is an Original Oil on Wood, dating from the early to mid 20th C. A man and a woman, in traditional 19th C. clothing, stand on a bend in the road, next to a bareback horse. A farmhouse (theirs?) is off to the right, in the distance. The clouds in the sky behind them seems ominous at first but there is a blue peaking out at the top. Bold brushstrokes for a diminutive piece – Impressive. Szemere-Strmnik studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. From 1913 he began exhibiting in Budapest. He spent several years in Germany. From 1928-31 he worked in Bratislava where, in 1928, he had a group exhibition.Outside measure of the wood panel is 5 1/8 X 7 1/8 and is in Good to Very Good Antique condition.Authentic Import Stamp on back (see final image).Please carefully examine all images for condition. This house looked charming surrounded be spring trees. I did this painting in thick oil paint on a 7×5 masonite board. I like using thick oil paint as it gives paintings a luscious texture that can’t be replicated in a print.

In late 2019, while waiting for glued picture frames to set, I took the cardboard that I had the frames lying on and ripped off a couple of small pieces. I grabbed some acrylic paint and did a quick wine painting. The first thing I noticed was the feel on how smooth the paint went on. Although the cardboard wasn’t primed, it did hold the colors. Cardboard, unlike canvas, adds its own character to the art: corrugation, creases and the advertising on the cardboard. I did a series of 12 paintings on my new “Cardboard Art” medium and put them on aBay for $.98. All 12 sold in the10 day auction, actually eBay bidders have bought over 750 cardboard paintings in a row since late 2019. The cardboard painting is then glued to a back piece of cardboard with the front of the painting receiving several coats of polyurethane; thus the painting is encapsulated for protection, longevity and enhancing the colors.
