I started painting in 1989 as a dentist in Michigan and began selling them from my art gallery in Roswell, GA in 1996. In 2001, I started selling on eBay and the rest is history! American Civil War Cast Plaster Sculpture Abraham Lincoln Stanton General Grant Artist: John Rogers (AMERICAN, 1829-1904)Tittle: «The Council of War»A cast plaster depicting President Abraham Lincoln, Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, and General Ulysses S. Grant discussing the Civil War. Modeled ca. 1873 Medium: Plaster Size: H: 24″ x Wide: 16″ Deep: 12» Condition: As found untouched. The brown patina uneven and pealed off the whole surface few damages around Lincoln left hand and paper. Few chips around base. Other wise in good condition. From an estate belonging to a private New York art collector. Does not carry authentication documentation. Selling as is. Abraham Lincoln: «Council of War» John Rogers Group. Plaster with reinforced metal figural group by John Rogers of New York titled, on the base, «The Council of War». General Grant is pointing out some salient features of a map to the President while Secretary of War Stanton observes. First introduced in 1867, the work proved so popular that three versions were produced over a number of years. This one is stamped on the base «Patented March 31 1868». Robert Todd Lincoln admired it greatly and Stanton effused: «In form and feature [it] surpasses any effort to embody the expression of that great man which I have seen. The whole group is very natural and the work, like others from the same hand, well represents interesting incidents of the time.» It has the original buff-colored painted finish $9,000.00 Total shipping cost must be covered by buyer.
