About Heavy Water Colors on Gaoli Paper The Yunnan artists presented their own original visions, stressing line, shape and color rather than subject and message. Even their content was original, dealing with romance, motherly love and emotions. They even used nudity, which in the traditional and Communist context is daring. Integral to the art is the heavy color technique taken from the Dunhuang Cave paintings. They generally used a Korean paper called gaolizhi because it holds both color and ink equally well. The paint was made from vegetable and mineral colors and was combined with a binding medium (sometimes sap) and water. Modern Chinese strong color paintings emphasize horizontal formation and the abstract treatment of human figures, animals, birds, and flowers, often interweaving the subjects and backgrounds into a whole unit. These images are portrayed by bright, thick colors achieved by layering successive coats of paint on the same spot over a period of time. This technique achieves a spectacular effect. The linear lines in the Dunhuang murals were admired and the Yunnan School pioneers recreated its rhythms in their art as the principal narrative device in illustration. The linear and repetitive elements in their style are drawn from both the ancient paintings as well as their own graphic design experience. Ting Shao Kuang was the first of the Beijing-trained artists to teach in the Yunnan Art Institute. Ting had studied such modern artists as Picasso and Miro, as well as Mexican muralists Rivera, Orozeo and Siqueiros, and was committed to creating a new Chinese style. The other founding member artists are Jiang Tiefeng, He Neng, Zhou Ling, He Deguang, Liu Shaohui, Chen Zhichuan and Ou Xinwen. The Yunnan School has been widely acclaimed for its unique style and technique. Following the tradition that calls for the student to copy paintings he admires, it is now common practice for young Chinese artists to follow the Yunnan group’s brushstrokes. This is an original one-of-a-kind painting and is signed Zhang Ting, a student in the Yunnan School, following the brushstrokes of a Yunnan master.
