Andre Hubert French Young Girls At The Well Mauritania Africa WC Painting

Andre Hubert (France, 1911-2009) was born on April 12, 1911, in Rouen, France. He began his career as a self-taught artist during a stay in Morocco, a period that also revealed an affinity for Expressionism. From 1946 onwards, his works reflected a geometric style derived from Cubism—a movement whose lessons he had fully assimilated. In 1947, he made his first foray into geometric abstraction through various studies of intersecting curves. In 1948, he abandoned the name Edmond Baptiste in favor of André Hubert. By 1977, his work featured compositions defined by sharp angles. Between 1974 and 1980, he explored Op Art, creating pieces with vertical slats that altered the image depending on the viewer’s position. He also produced a series of white, low-relief paintings that combined curves and lines.
