He was an accomplished tonalist painter known for his quiet and poetic rural landscapes. He studied at the Art Students’ League in NYC with James Carroll Beckwith. Early on in his career he fell under the influence of Hugh Bolton-Jones, who also became a lifelong friend. Post’s fondness for the rural landscape with the ever-present meandering stream, generally in autumn colors, dominated much of his life’s output.Post at first worked out of New York City, making frequent forays to New Jersey and Connecticut. In 1912, he settled in rural West Morris, Connecticut where the Bantam River became the dominant theme in his landscapes.Almost every year from 1883 until his death, Post exhibited at the National Academy of Design. He exhibited widely at all the major venues including the New York Watercolor Club, the Salmagundi Club, the New York Society of Painters and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. A major retrospective of Post was held at the Mattatuck Museum in 1998. Combined Shipping Discount Policy: 20% off all combinable items. Check out our other art work auctions.
