Hermann Koch (1886-1939) was an important classically trained painter whose work is collected, including by European royalty. This piece is a bit of a departure from his typical work which tended to focus on portraiture. Later in his career, after 1900 he focused more on landscapes. This painting is a pastel or graphite piece on paper, signed and dated 1910 lower right. It appears to be a quick sketch and may well have been done plein air.
