George Smith – British Impressionist – oil painting with cows -circa 1930

Beautiful small painting with vibrant colours – oil on panel – in original frame.In very good condtion; recently professionally cleaned surface. Reframed in its original frame.The panel is 7 inches high – 10 inches wide. George Smith RSA (1870 – 1934). Born Mid Calder, Midlothian, died Edinburgh. Painter of oil on landscapes and animal subjects, especially scenes involving working horses. Educated at George Watsons College, studied art at Board of Manufacturers School, Edinburgh and Antwerp under Verlat. His paintings had charm, capturing the spirit of the heavy horses as they worked on farms and under dappled sunlight in woodlands. He exhibited at the Royal Academy (5), the Royal Scottish Academy (128), the Royal Hibernian Academy (3), the Glasgow Institute of Fine Art (87), the Aberdeen Artists Society between 1896 and 1931 and also at the Liverpool Galleries (3).

Offered here is a rare original watercolor by Russian born California artist Sergey Scherbakoff, circa 1930s or ’40s. Painting is watercolor on paper and measures 10 3/8 x 14 1/8 inches (sight). The overall framed size is 19 x 25 inches. Painting is signed at lower right. Paper is lightly toned. Painting is in very good condition under glass, and includes fresh matting and wood framing. Painting was recently acquired from an estate near San Francisco. ———- Sergey John Scherbakoff (1894-1967) Born in Russia, Sergey Scherbakoff was a watercolorist who was encouraged in his art talent by his mother, who was an amateur artist. At age 14, he entered the Kharkov Academy of Fine Arts where he studied art and architecture. In 1912, he became a member of the Russian Art Society. Most of his family perished during the Russian Revolution, and he escaped to Tokyo in 1919. There he exhibited at the Imperial Japanese Art Association and sold many of his marine paintings to the imperial family. In 1922, he settled in San Francisco where he remained until his death. He painted the California landscape and did many watercolors of Yosemite, the Russian River, Carmel, and Marin County. Many of his paintings show the Oriental influence.
