Sue Durkee-Monroe1962 – 2021Sue Durkee-Monroe is an award winning artist who was born into an artistic family in the city of Ovid, Michigan in the 1930’s. She found her passion for the arts almost immediately leaving the womb, dabbling in sketching, painting, sewing, music, and other handicrafts. It didn’t take long for her to discover that her expressive calling was to share the visions inside her mind on paper, canvas, and any other surface available to her. Self taught and always expanding her innovative horizons through classes, books, and research, she uses oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, charcoal, and pen & ink, etc to bring her visions to life. Her technique focuses on the tiny details, which stems from her roots in portraiture. When you look at her work you will always notice how each and every face has their own unique features and personality. Although her beginnings are in portraits she has evolved to incorporate scenery, flowers, and animals, etc into her repertoire. Inspired by childhood experiences, places she visits, and people she sees, she hopes to give the viewer something to lift their spirits and give them something wonderful to think about for a fragment of time. Throughout life she has remained an active artist creating over a thousand pieces, all while raising 3 boys and working other jobs. She has many works on permanent display at art galleries, historical landmarks, hospitals, schools, police departments, businesses, churches, nursing homes throughout Michigan, as well as in many Private Collections.
